Tank Track.Tutorial for 3d Studio Max

 By Arxwn

This tutorial will show you how to make caterpillar tracks to use in your projects (tank tracks, industrial tracks whatever) !

Our first concern is to create the mesh that will be replicated along the track.

We begin  with a rectangle shape with rounded edges

We then extrude the shape making sure that it has at least 3 segments

Convert the shape to editable poly and select the front faces. Extrude them a couple of times

Now extrude the back middle face a couple of times too. We do this so when we multiply our mesh it will show as each piece fits the next one

Create a cylinder and put it between the extruded faces. Create one for the front and one for the back

The next step is to clone (copy) the front cylinder and substract it from our mesh so holes are created . We do the same on the back too.

 Hi There,

Great tutorial! I've created the tank tracks in 3D Studio Max 7 and have gotten them working, but there's a small problem.

I've attached the tracks & their splines to a parent object via a parent/child heirarchy, and have in turn constrained the tank to a curved path. Problem is, whenever the rotation axis of the parent tank object changes as it moves along the path, the treads seem to want to do their own thing and rotate in an entirely different direction! lol

Any ideas on how to keep the tank tracks in line whenever travelling on anything other than a straight line?

Thanks a bunch.

EBS

Parent(Link)the tracks and lines to point helpers, and them in turn to your tank model

My treads deform to follow the curve of the line. Any way to keep them rigid?
